Review: Panti Sisters is not the Usual ‘Gay Comedy’ with a bad ending

REVIEW – Forget the antics of Vice Ganda comedy movies, the Panti Sisters movie redefined how Philippine gay-themed comedies should be.

Even in the 80’s, comedy movies that include gay or lgbt characters usually bank on attacking the physical appearance and intelligence of the ‘gay’ character to make the movie funny. An example of which are the movies of Roderick Paulate and Vice Ganda. To be fair, it does work as proven by the gross movie sales of Vice Ganda starred movies. Until Paolo Ballesteros lately challenge the norms of local gay-themed comedies.

Unlike other lgbt actors, Paolo Balllesteros has the good looks whether it be for a male, female or trans movie character. He doesn’t need to deliver a funny punch line just to make the audience laugh. How he brings his character to life and make it into a drag-level diva for this movie are more than enough to amaze you how passionate he is with his make-up skills.

Christian Bables and Martin del Rosario’s characters are the ones that brought comedy and charm to the movie. Particularly funny are the scenes when they emulated sailormoon characters, and how they plan on ‘making babies’ to get their inheritance.

No punch lines, no attacks on physical appearance as they are all good looking, not playing dumb characters, yet the movie will give you a good laugh. Panti Sisters just elevated the standard of how Filipino gay-themed comedy movies should be. Ending was a bit disappointing though as I didn’t think it was necessary. But will we still see a part 2? I’ll be waiting!
