Explore Cebu (Modes of Transport)
Explore Cebu
How to Explore Cebu? How do we go around the Island? Exploring Cebu can be quite tricky, but as long as you remember a few bits of information on Cebu’s modes of transport, you can move around easily and safely.
When riding a Jeepney and you would like the Jeepney to stop, just say ‘PARA’ (pa-ra) and the driver will stop and park the Jeepney so you can safely disembark
Jeepney
The major mode of transport in Cebu City and other places in Cebu is the Jeepney. Jeepneys and multicabs have designated routes within the city and outside. Jeepneys are colorful jeeps with two long benches opposite each other. Multicabs are plain-looking vehicles that resemble a small van, but it has open windows just like the jeepneys. The regular fare is 7 pesos for the first 4 kilometers and an additional 50cents for the succeeding kilometer. If not sure how much to pay, you can ask the person beside you. Just tell them where you embark and the location where you will disembark. Most passengers can tell how much you need to pay. If there’s no other passenger, you can always the driver or the ‘conductor’ (the one who is stationed at the entrance of the Jeepney collecting the fare of the passengers).
Taxi
Another mode of transport in Cebu is the taxi cab. Taxi cabs vary car models. Taxi cabs have signs, LTFRB Registration number, and a taximeter, which is mandatory in every cab. The flag down rate is 30 pesos and 2.50 pesos for succeeding meters.
Nowadays, there’s also the GRAB and UBER service, an app-based car rent service. It’s still a taxi but instead of waiting for a taxi on the street, you just use the app, enter your origin and destination, and then the app will locate the nearest taxi to you and will pick you up. The app will display the estimate fare you need to pay, the name of your driver and track of your route. It’s very convenient as you can call and message the driver if you have further instructions, or especially if you left something on the car so they can return it for you.
Bus
Buses are also available but these tend to ply exclusively along the north-south route. There are two major bus terminals as the name implies for direction of travel – North Bus terminal at M. Logarta Avenue, Mandaue City and South Bus terminal at N. Bacalso Avenue, Pahina Central, Cebu City.
You can either ride the Airconditioned Bus or the Regular Bus. Price is slightly higher for the Airconditioned Bus but it’s also comfy and you can just sleep for the entire journey.
Tricycle
The major mode of transport in the province and other places in Cebu is the tricycle, a small cab powered by a motorcycle that can accommodate up to 3 passengers. Tricycles are usually limited only to the city or town where they are licensed to operate, but in some cases they can convey you to neighboring towns. The normal rate for tricycles in Cebu City is 7 pesos per kilometer.
What’s great about Cebu is that the local passengers are always eager to help and answer your questions. The locals can speak and understand English, so you wont be lost as long as you ask around!
